Biking from Mt. Hood to the Columbia River Gorge

After following a portion of the historic Oregon Trail along the flanks of Mt. Hood, our route traces an ancient glacial ridgeline to the Columbia River National Scenic Area. Along the way we'll experience the legendary singletrack atop Surveyor's Ridge, the thrilling descent from High Prairie, and panoramic views of the Cascade Mountain Range. This mountain bike trip is filled with exciting novelties such as camping at a fire lookout tower, crisscrossing glacier-fed streams, riding through the scenic Hood River Valley, and dipping into the cool waters of the mighty Columbia River. Highlights include views of Mt. Adams and Mt St. Helens as well!

Though we descend from alpine to high desert (a total elevation loss of 4,000 feet), this is an athletic tour with a significant amount of climbing and descending each day. Many of the trails we follow have options for easier logging roads and/or more technical singletrack, making this an ideal tour for riders of varying abilities.

Accommodations:

Camping in primitive campsites with no running water. On this trip we utilize a portable toilet, and exercise a leave-no-trace policy. There are no shower facilities, but solar showers will be available. Cell coverage is very spotty. In case of emergency, land lines are available day 4 and day 5. This trip has high elevation camps (above 5000 feet).

Itinerary:
(subject to change)

~ Day 1 - Barlow Road ~
You'll spend most of the day following the Barlow Road. This is part of the Oregon Trail and was built in the mid-1800s. The trail is mostly narrow Jeep road. The route drops from approximately 4,200 feet to 2,800 feet. This 1,400-foot drop will go from a sub-alpine rainforest environment to a high desert environment. A stop for lunch gives a quick break before ascending 1,000 feet to Grasshopper Point, the night's camp. Total Mileage: 22 miles

~ Day 2 - Gunsight Ridge and Lookout Mountain ~
The ride today takes the tour alongside Mt. Hood's Gunsight Ridge. You'll have superb views of Mt. Hood and Badger Lake all day, with a challenging climb leading to the lunch spot. The second half of the day starts with a short hike to Lookout Mountain (elevation: 6,200 feet). From here you can see 8 surrounding peaks and views of several glacially carved valleys. You'll spend the rest of the day descending on exceptional singletrack to the Eight Mile Creek camp. Total Mileage: 22 miles

~ Day 3 - Kneable Springs, Bottle Prairie and Eight Mile Creek ~
The morning begins with a delicious breakfast prepared by your guides. Eat up, because you'll need the energy for the unbelievable day of singletrack awaiting you. Miles and miles of fast, flowing singletrack dot the mountain and you'll ride most of it. The descending is fast and the climbs are worth it. Highlights include the highly rated Bottle Prairie descent, a rest stop at a fire tower and even a few stunts. Once again, camp will be at Eight Mile Creek. Total Mileage: 25 miles

~ Day 4 - Dog River Trail and Mt Hood ~
Today you'll ride a favorite trail in Oregon - Dog River Trail, to the town of Mt. Hood. This trail winds its way along the Mt. Hood watershed, proving exceptional singletrack riding. After lunch, there's a hike into the Mt. Hood wilderness to explore a cascading waterfall. If you want to go for a swim, jump in! There's a shuttle back to the Eight Mile Creek camp with an optional evening ride from camp. Total Mileage: 18 miles

~ Day 5 - Surveyor's Ridge ~
The day starts with a descent on the Knebal Springs trail followed by a climb out of creek drainage. A quick ride on forest roads takes the tour to Surveyor's Ridge and the fabulous singletrack that traverses its length. Along the way, you'll be rewarded with exceptional views of Mount Hood and the Hood River Valley. The singletrack you'll be riding on is challenging at times; but, for the most part, it's great intermediate cruising terrain. If you'd like, an optional afternoon ride goes down the Oak Ridge Trail for awesome singletrack riding. The camp for this night is at Surveyor's Ridge. Total Mileage: 20 miles

~ Day 6 - Hood River ~
After a brisk "warm-up" climb of a couple miles, the next 15 miles is a long descent on logging roads. The terrain will vary from gravel to smooth doubletrack. There's another quick climb and descend to the lunch spot. After lunch, a short climb takes you to the top of a ridge with great view of the town of Hood River and the Columbia River far below. A short singletrack leads to Whiskey Creek Road (gravel) and several miles of fast descent. Once down in the valley, the tour follows paved country roads through the orchards of the Hood River Valley and the final descent down to the tour's end at the Columbia River. Total Mileage: 28 miles
